ADVANCED ARTICLES

The Paleo Diet basics are what they are and are pretty easy to understand. What about topics that are kind of grey though? For instance, you might see some Paleo Recipes including sweet potatoes. I thought potatoes were off limits? Well, not necessarily. Then there are dairy products. Milk is a no-no, unless… What about wild rice? I’ve compiled a list of articles to discuss some of the most commonly asked questions.

Dairy

Oils

Sweet Potatoes

Quinoa

Wild Rice

The Whole Wheat Arbitrage

Can you think of anymore gray areas or topics worthy of discussion? Do you know of a modern day food that might not be on the Paleo list but is still beneficial to human health? Leave a comment and let everyone know!

Why are beans/legumes not part of a paleo diet? It is a whole food and not processed, and they have a wealth of fiber. This is the one that boggles my mind. I am seriously researching this lifestyle, and the beans/legumes as a “no-no” always makes me wonder why. So I thought I would ask.

Hi Joanne,
There are a host of reasons. You cannot pick a legume and eat it raw (they are toxic in raw state, not to mention very hard)Yes they have lots of fiber, but also have a lot of carbs. Most importantly, they contain a lot of anti-nutrients, mainly lectin and phytic acid. Lastly, they make you fart. That being said, I enjoy legumes occasionally and they can be quite healthy if you sprout or ferment them as this destroys most of the anti nutrients and adds other healthy nutrients. Check out the Weston A Price foundation for more info about sprouting.
Best,
Greg

Wow! I never knew they were toxic in their raw state. Very interesting. So motto is to enjoy occasionally, but not as a mainstay? And I want to thank you for your quick reply. That is awesome to know you are really working this site.

I’d be interested in hearing what you have to say about Wild Rice. I know some of my ancestors ate it – and it’s been argued that since it’s not actually a rice, but a grass, its ok to eat, but I have seen many paleo websites argue against eating it.

I don’t have much of an opinion on wild rice, because I just minimize any kind of rice consumption altogether. I will say that it probably won’t hurt if you are eating it once in a while, just don’t eat it all the time, like several other foods that aren’t really paleo but at the same time won’t really kill you with an occasional indulgence.
Best,
Greg
